A New York undercover police officer was shot and wounded Thursday by a robbery suspect, who was apprehended following a brief standoff.
The shooting happened shortly before 1 p.m. when a suspect in a robbery spotted undercover Suffolk County police officers conducting a surveillance outside the man's home in Coram, WCBS-TV reports. When the suspect fled his house, one of the officers got out and pursued the man.
The officer caught up with the suspect and ordered him to stop. The suspect then began shooting and struck the officer in his upper right thigh, according to police.
Other officers were able to apply tourniquets to the wounded officer's leg to stop the bleeding. He was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery. The officer, who has a 17-month-old daughter and is engaged to be married, is expected to recover.
A 20-minute standoff with the suspect ensued following the shooting. The incident ended with police arresting Jannell Funderburke, a 20-year-old member of gang member who was wanted for a recent robbery. He faces an attempted murder charge, along with the robbery charges.
